Will IT Be Run by Social Scientists?

As a big fan of Karl Weick & Gary Klein, I'm sympathetic to Gartner researcher Tom Austin's answer of "yes" to this question in this interview.

However, I'd probably answer "no, but." I do think that systems engineers and architects are going to have to become much more literate about social and organizational behavior, and about how information technologies affect individual and group sensemaking and decision making.

And, managers at all levels are also probably going to traverse a similar learning curve.

IT might even have a few social scientists on staff who are techno-literate. But, I don't think you'll have to have a degree in the field to effectively use the required social science knowledge.
